PHYLLIS SMART

Prior to becoming a Trustee I was employed by NHS Grampian for over 30 years and held a number of positions in hospital and community settings. Following a career break I came to work in Turriff as a Health Visitor where I had the opportunity to be part of the original Steering Group that established Home-Start Deveron in 1999.

In 2000 I was appointed as a Senior Nurse for Child Protection and was unable to continue a commitment to the Home-Start Deveron. I was promoted to Nurse Consultant Child Protection in 2005 and I held this post until I retired in 2017. As part of my child protection responsibilities I developed training, and supervision for frontline staff, worked with partner agencies, advised senior manager and NHS Grampian Health Board Directors on matters pertaining to child protection and supported national child protection practice and guidance. As a member of the North East of Scotland Child Protection Committee, I chaired the Training and Development Subgroup for a time before taking over as Chair of the Significant Case Review Portfolio Group.

Education and learning new skills has always been a part of my life I gained an MSc in Child care and Protection Studies from the University of Dundee and worked closely with Robert Gordon University, teaching nursing and midwifery students advising on curriculum content and leading on research relating to child protection and case supervision. In my spare time I like gardening, beekeeping and doting on my grandchildren.
