Staff & Board Members of Home-Start Deveron

Martin Robertson Senior Coordinator

I joined Home-Start Deveron as Senior Co-ordinator in July 2017.

Sonia Pirie - Family Support Worker

I am a fun loving mum to 3 teenage children. I studied childcare at Moray College when I left school and have gained the qualifications of Child Care and Learning Development, SVQ 2 & 3. After college I became a Nanny to various families until I stopped working to become a mum myself. Once my children started school I became a volunteer for various groups and childrens clubs in my local community, and also took the opportunity to start work again,  during which time I have worked at Banff Primary School, and Whitehills Playgroup. After 15 years as a practitioner playleader I wanted to face new challenges, but still be involved in working alongside children, and in June 2014 I was delighted to get the role of a Family Support Worker at Homestart-Deveron. I am thoroughly enjoying being part of a great team in supporting the families of our community.

Morag Wilson - Family Support Worker

After studying Hotel Management at RGIT, I had a varied career within the Hotel and Catering Industry working latterly as General Site Services Manager for a contract catering company at an oil company. I never returned to the industry after having my children, enjoying my role as a full time mum but gradually became more involved as a volunteer at the local school and various groups and organisations within the community. I became a volunteer with Home-Start Deveron in 2011 with the intention of becoming a home visiting volunteer. I thoroughly enjoyed the training and the volunteer work and started getting involved with group work. I was thoroughly delighted to get the role of Family Support Worker and look forward to working with groups and families alike.

Tracy Fleming - Administrator

I joined Home-Start as an Administrator in April 2017, having previously served on the Board of Trustees.

Christine Cockburn - Trustee

I  was one of the initial Steering Group which set up Home-Start Deveron in 1999 and have been a Board member ever since and a Trustee once Home-Start Deveron became a Charitable Company Limited by Guarantee. My background is in the National Health Service and teaching.  I trained as a radiographer and went on to teach radiography at university.

I've had various jobs on the Board over the years including: Chair, Secretary, Vice Chair and involvement in Funding Applications.  Now my role is mainly in Quality Assurance.   I enjoy the work I do behind the scenes to ensure that Home-Start Deveron continues to offer help to families with young children, who are in need of the support and friendship our volunteers give.

Outwith Home-Start Deveron I like to spend time with my four lovely nieces and my nephew.  Two are married with children and so I also have two great-nephews and two great-nieces who I love to bits!

Tracy Fleming - Trustee

I am married and a mum to my 3 year old son & 3month old daughter.  I first attended Home-Start Deveron as a new mum, bringing my son along to the baby groups that are run here.  I found these groups really enjoyable, fun and informative, but above all, it was the opportunity to meet other first time mums and share our experiences and any concerns we may have had with each other over a cuppa at the end of the sessions.

As a result of these groups I saw posters advertising for Trustees to join Home-Start Deveron and after meeting with Fiona to find out what being a Trustee would entail and attending a Board meeting, I decided to apply and was delighted to be recently elected to the Board.  I'm looking forward to the challenges ahead and hopefully my skills and knowledge as a Health-care professional and business owner will enable me to add value to the team and service which provides much needed support to families in the local area.

Fiona Mathers - Trustee

I am one of the founder members of Home-Start Deveron and the current Chairperson.  When I first became involved in the initial steering group in Turriff my children were in primary school.    They are now all grown up and have homes of their own. In October 2011 I became a Grandma for the first time - what a life changing event.  An incredible experience when your ‘child’ becomes a ‘parent’ and you become ‘that generation’!    The purpose of Home Start is to support families in the early years of their children’s lives.

As a volunteer Trustee this means understanding what is needed from a parent’s perspective, what makes a difference to them and their babies, toddlers and pre-school children.  I then try to make this happen, to secure the necessary funds to make this possible. To lead and support the Board of Trustees to implement the right policies and procedures required to deliver the best possible services in the Deveron valley area.

My role as Chairperson/Trustee is all about people and ‘making connections’ helping to bridge the gaps between policy makers, local and national and making sure ‘our story’ about the needs at Home Start Deveron are known, recognised and valued.  People support people and developing working relationships is paramount to the success of HSD.

As a charity we function with business principles ensuring quality services are being delivered by competent and confident staff and volunteers.  We have Quality Assurance measurements and compliance standards to meet. To achieve these standards all Trustees are actively involved in different roles and responsibilities similar to any company or business.

We work as a team, as many organisation do we work remotely (from our own homes) and use the offices at Strait Path for meetings.  Space does not allow us to be ‘based there’ and therefore everything needs to be co-ordinated.  As in all effective teams good communication is essential, and this is a challenge for us all.

Why do I do it?  I feel I am useful and serving a purpose.  I have a range of skills, knowledge and experience that ‘help’ and I believe do make a difference. I enjoy the work (most of the time) and I get to work within my own community and get to chance to work with people from all walks of life. I feel a great sense of achievement when things come together and my resilience and sense of humour usually see me through when times are tough and particularly challenging.

At the end of the day ‘it is the quality of our relationships that is the measurement of who we are’.  I think that says it all.

Lorna Rennie - Trustee

I became aware of the work of Home-Start Deveron several years ago when the Co-ordinator visited our local Guild Branch to give a talk on what the group was all about.

Having retired after working as a School Administrator for 30 years, I was thinking of doing something on a voluntary basis and the opportunity arose when I attended the 10th Birthday Lunch at Home-Start Deveron in 2009 where a plea was made for volunteers to join the group.

I offered to help in an administration capacity and was then invited to become a trustee and Treasurer. Members of the Board and the staff are all very friendly and welcoming and I know that the support given to the families by the volunteers is very much appreciated.

Lynne Ross - Trustee

Jayne Hepburn - Trustee

Edie Stephen - Trustee

I’m married and have three grown up daughters. I first became aware of Home-Start Deveron in 2004, when I saw a recruitment poster in my local supermarket. At that time I was suffering from “empty nest syndrome”, my girls had all left home, and I was feeling a bit lost. I spoke to the girls, and they all said “go for it Mum”. I completed my training and was matched with my first family in June 2004. I love being involved and find it very rewarding, at times challenging, but a great experience.

I joined the Fundraising Group in 2005, making new friends along the way, and was invited to become a Board Member in 2006. I am passionate about Home-Start Deveron, I can see the difference home visiting makes, and it is so satisfying to see a family progress and no longer require the service. Families from all walks of life use the service and I feel a great sense of achievement in helping them along the way. I feel Home-Start Deveron is providing an excellent, vital service in our community.
