About Home-Start Deveron

Home-Start is a nationwide registered charity which supports families who have at least one child under the age of five years. To us, every family is special and we respond to each family’s needs through a combination of home visiting support, group work and social events.

We do this by recruiting and training volunteers, who are usually parents themselves, to visit families with young children to offer informal, friendly, non-judgemental and confidential support to help build the family’s confidence and ability to cope.

Home-Start’s unique offer of friendship to families is recognised as an effective means of family support. Home-Start aims to support families towards independence so that the volunteer is no longer required.

Home-Start’s vision is to see a society in which every parent has the support they need to give their children the best possible start in life. Home-Start Deveron originated in 1999 and operates throughout the Deveron Valley area, serving Aberchirder, Banff, Huntly, Macduff, Portsoy, Turriff and surrounding areas.

Home-Start Deveron can help families with many issues, for example:

  • living in rural and social isolation with inadequate public transport
  • drug and alcohol abuse
  • domestic abuse
  • living with terminal illness
  • coping with post natal depression
  • coping with children affected with disability
  • families finding parenting a struggle
  • parents looking for the company of others in similar situations for chats and reassurance

Home-Start Deveron offers Stay and Play groups, Baby Buddies groups (for parents with children under 18 months), Twinkles (a group for parents with twins or more!), Baby Massage classes, Bookbug sessions, Cooking with Confidence classes, craft sessions, parenting advice, financial guidance, one-to-one support and more.

The service is free, though donations are gratefully accepted.

  • “I think Home-Start Deveron is excellent, very well run. I have been to baby massage and Bookbug which both have been great fun and it is great to get out and mix with other people and children. I think Wendy is wonderful very friendly and it’s nice to have a coffee and a news after the class... I will totally recommend it to new mums I know.”
  • “I was a Volunteer briefly a few years ago however it was becoming a mum again after twelve years that I realised how great Home-Start is. I have really enjoyed baby massage, Bookbug and regularly attended baby buddies. I have had lots of fun with my baby at Home-Start and Wendy has been great fun, support and encouragement. I would like to thank Home-Start for the work you put in.”
  • “I would absolutely recommend Home-Start to anyone as they are just a wonderful group well more like an extended family as the staff are so welcoming and friendly to everyone.”
  • “The news was devastating; to be told that your child has cancer, it was news that was to turn our world upside down, our emotions went into overdrive, and without support from Home-Start Deveron we would be finding this whole situation so much harder.”
  • “Thanks to my volunteer I have two hours of sanity without my year-old twins!”
  • “Home-Start has helped me through one of the toughest times in my life and I can’t imagine how it would have been without them. They gave me support, encouragement and reassurance.”
  • “For Home-Start it is not just a person doing a job, it is someone who genuinely cares.”
  • “Home Start was my shining light at the end of what often seemed to be a very long and dark tunnel.”
  • “My volunteer has been my lifeline. Without her I would not be where I am today.”
  • “Home Start is a great way of making new friends in the same situation as you. The kids can play and make friends too. The staff are really supportive and are always ready to help. Home-Start helped me build my confidence and make friends.”
  • “I met other mums of twins – I had felt very isolated as I could not get out of the house with the demands of twins and no family near hand to help.”
